Ten Thousand Fencers

Who have you recuited?

Well the weekend is over and with it the Copeland Clinic. Yes I learned a lot. And I took some notes so I could remember it all.
On Saturday We covered a lot!
1. Basics of beats and priority. Basically we did a drill that involved one person beating the others blade and taking the priority. That person was then the attacker until the other fencer took back the priority. I realized that I was planting my foot every time I went to beat. I need to work on separating my blade from my feet as they seem to be connected somehow.
2. Disengages - Basically one person tried to avoid the others blade by disengaging. I need to work on keeping my movements smaller. Also I was shown the importance of not concentrating on the blade. This makes it very hard to see any movement until it to late. Soft eye on the area of the bib lets you use your peripheral vision more.
3. and 4. We worked on parries direct and circular. Again small circles and straight lines as David always says. This was really useful as I have really needed to work on my parries. I can't wait to start applying this to my Epee.
5. Compound attacks. Parry circular 6, 4, 6. Basically we attacked using this combination of parries. If you made blade contact at any point then you directly attacked. I found this some what difficult. My problem was two fold, either I concentrated so much on the combination that I forgot to attack when I got blade contact or I anticipated the contact and attacked before I had priority.
6.This time we did compound attack 8, 6, circle 6. All with the same Idea as above and of course I had the same difficulties. I will definitely be trying to practice and use this in bouting.
7. We then combined these two and practiced applying them in high or low line attacks.
8. The last thing we worked on on Saturday before we did some open bouting was holding your parry in order to see what the other person was going to do and then acting accordingly.

All in all it was a very informative day. I did have some moments of doubt and frustration . Most of them involved my frustration as not being able to fulfill the role of coach very well. I had a hard time figuring out how to disengage quickly to help my partner practice the combination parries. Again it helped me see my week areas and what I needed to practice.
The other problem I had was I was overheated and developed a bad headache (probably due to dehydration too) which made it harder for me to concentrate and at the end of the day I was slightly nausous.

So that night I went to bed early in order to be rested for Sunday.
