First Fencing Competition

So I participated in my first fencing competition last night. It was an unsanctioned beginners epee tournament. It was fun. I was however surprised at how nervous I was. I arrived 15 minutes early which was not really enough time to get ready and warm up. We did two different pools.… Continue

Fencing Improvements After the Clinic

So I've been chomping at the bit to do some fencing and see what I actually learned at the clinic. Last night was my first chance. We are doing scheduled painting and cleaning at the club this week to get everything ship shape for the new season, so we haven't had class or open fencing… Continue

Second Day My Fencing Clinic Experience

OK, So on day two I was prepped with water and Tylenol prior to starting and yes I was soar. So we covered a lot on Sunday but it was a slightly shorter day. We spent a lot of time on ripostes and remises. We basically practiced 4 to 5 different ways to attack. 1. Changing your attack s… Continue

My Fencing Clinic Experience

Well the weekend is over and with it the Copeland Clinic. Yes I learned a lot. And I took some notes so I could remember it all. On Saturday We covered a lot! 1. Basics of beats and priority. Basically we did a drill that involved one person beating the others blade and taking the priority. That person was then the attacker until the other fencer took back the priority. I realized that I was planting my foot every time I went to beat. I need to work on separating my blade from my feet as they se… Continue

Getting Ready for the Copeland Clinic this Weekend

I am taking a two day clinic this weekend with Gary Copeland. I am very excited. I am hoping to learn a lot and get some skills incorporated into my repertoire. I am hoping it won't be too overwhelming that I can't remember it all. I also tried foil for the first time a week or so… Continue

Fencing Training

Here is a video of my class today. It's definitely not all that exciting but I wanted to post it so that I would have a reference to look back at. I have decided to put myself in a training regiment. I am currently fencing three days a week. Tuesday is class followed by open bouting. Thursday is open bouting and I also usually have my private lesson then too. Saturday is class again followed by open bouting. On the days off (Mon. Wed. and Fri.) I am planning on brisk walking i… Continue

Small Changes

I tried foil for the first time this week. It was pretty fun. It took some concentration to get priority. I am so used to Epee that it was a little hard to remember that I can't just hit someone with out having priority or addressing the blade. Plus I am so used to going for the arm that it was a little weird. I think I am going to stick with Epee for now. I am continuing with class once a week, a lesson once a week and open fencing twice a week. The class and open fencing are helpful for honing… Continue

Working on... parries, footwork and leading with the tip!

OK so I have had two more lessons and have been discovering lots of interesting facts. 1. I need to do more footwork. When I get tired I am loosing my form. When I am concentrating on something I am loosing my form. I am trying to work on a more sport style on guard and less of a sideways classical stance. I am also popping up when I recover from a lunge. I also need to get down and get my center better. 2. I need to practice my parries in front of the mirror. I am using my arm instead of my f… Continue

Learning to Wait, Technique First

I took this picture at a youth tournament and it reminds me of where I am at right now. I need to learn to wait and plan. I am really enjoying my private lessons and am learning a lot. I am starting to understand what is happening when I get touched and I am seeing missed opportunities… Continue

Incorporating Lessons into Bouting

I can always tell when I am acquiring a new skill. I tend to regress a little on things I already know or are doing correctly because I am concentrating on the new skills. I did notice some improvement on my beats and also on setting up a move using multiple actions. I actually did two fleshes today! And a couple compound actions. It sure beats doing the same thing over and over. But I also got a little frustrated because it seemed like somethings regressed a little. It's easy to know an action… Continue

Private Lessons

I had my first private lesson tonight. It's interesting to realize that I have already fallen into bad habits. I learned things correctly but then months later have realized that I am no longer doing things the way I learned then but have fallen into a bad habit. My current bad habits that I am working on is leading with my foot instead of my tip. I am consciously working on this and am improving. I do catch myself doing it still especially in bouting but not as often. Another habit I had no ide… Continue

New to Fencing

I hope to use this blog to write about my experiences as woman learning how to fence. So stay tuned. I have been fencing for almost four months now. I wish I would have started blogging about it earlier as my fencing experience has changed and grown immensely in the last few months. When I first started think about fencing I thought "it looks pretty easy." I was surprised in many ways. Not only is it much more involved then I ever considered, but it is also very aerobic. I am always drenched wit… Continue
