Assistant Moniteur Workshop

The day was long, and we covered a lot of ground in 8 hours - and 8 fencers from 5 clubs are a bit closer to being certified by the United States Fencing Coaches Association as Assistant Moniteurs, the first step toward professional certification as coaches. The workshop covered a detailed review of beginner level skills and their applications, discussions of training, roles, and ethics, and practice demonstrating skills and teaching in a group lesson format. Participants rated the workshop high… Continue

Thoughts on Teaching 1

I have been pondering the value of individual lessons recently. For beginning and intermediate students I am beginning to believe that individual lessons early on create stagnation. Certainly the games approach to coaching suggests that extensive correction stifles higher level performance in any sport later. And the group lesson limits correction or work in depth on an single problem. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that for anyone short of the serious competitive level that a lesson of 2… Continue

AFL Championships

We served as the host club for the 2008 American Fencing League Championships, the only national level event for dry (or standard or steam) fencers. It was a small championships by USFA standards, 20 fencers in four individual (foil, epee, sabre, and three weapon) and four team events over two days. But the fencers took the event very seriously, we started on time and ended on schedule, there were no malfunctions in the equipment (no boxes or reels or electric weapons to malfunction), directing… Continue
